Hoarfrost Plains

New Life as a Max Level Archmage

Hoarfrost Plains is a sprawling, wind-scoured hunting ground beyond the Granite Spines, important both as a source of valuable Frostmaw Titan materials and as the first place where Vivisari Vexaria’s power begins to look impossible even by the standards of the world she once knew. To Vivisari Vexaria, the region is familiar territory from the old game; to everyone else, it is an isolated, difficult, and increasingly implausible source of scarce resources. That contrast makes the plains more than a wilderness: they become a measuring ground where memory, geography, economics, and overwhelming power collide.

Setting and Access

Hoarfrost Plains lies beyond the jagged Granite Spines, in a direction that Vivisari Vexaria knows from tens of thousands of hours spent playing Seven Cataclysms. After gathering what she needed in Prismarche, she chose the plains as a convenient hunting destination because the route was easy for her to navigate and the region offered monsters at a level that would let her avoid drawing attention. The journey was not conventional travel. She cast Invisibility, Fly, and Blink, rose roughly a thousand feet above the city, and crossed the intervening distance through repeated short-range teleports until Prismarche vanished behind her and the plains appeared after a few dozen uses of Blink.

The magic made the journey fast but not effortless. Blink was normally a battlefield repositioning skill, not a means of crossing miles, and even Vivisari Vexaria’s abnormal statistics could not turn it into unlimited long-distance travel. Repeated spatial relocation also caused severe bodily disorientation, as if the traveler were swallowed by something between or outside physical reality before being expelled back into the world. The plains therefore combine apparent accessibility with an underlying barrier: they are easy for Vivi because she possesses exceptional mobility, but their normal remoteness remains decisive for ordinary hunters.

Climate and Hunting Ground

The plains are intensely cold, with an icy wind strong enough to make even Vivisari Vexaria vaguely uncomfortable. Her statistics protected her from most of the temperature’s effects but not all of them. When she descended, her bare feet touched tightly packed snow, and she instinctively drew her robes closer despite the spell protecting her from the cold. The physical contradiction captures her broader experience after transmigration: the gale moved her hair and the snow felt real, yet her magical defenses prevented the environment from affecting her as it should.

Hoarfrost Plains is also a recognized mid-tier hunting zone. Vivisari Vexaria had spent more than a hundred hours there grinding resources and levels, and she remembered its Frostmaw Titans as one of the best money-making methods in the early days of Seven Cataclysms. The beasts resemble polar bears twice the size of elephants. Their pelts can be made into an armor set considered surprisingly powerful for its tier, making the equipment desirable to nearly every rogue and to some tank classes around level seven hundred. Vivi deliberately selected the area because level seven hundred was low beside her own level, allowing her to harvest useful materials without immediately revealing the full extent of her strength.

Her restraint was practical as well as nostalgic. The most powerful monsters would produce parts that the Adventurer’s Guild might not be able to compensate adequately, whereas Frostmaw Titans offered a middle ground between safety, profit, and concealment. She even rejected the simplest overwhelming solution: using the level-1800 spell Kaelum’s Thousand-Year Pyre would have destroyed a quarter mile of terrain and vaporized the very resources she intended to sell.

Vivisari Vexaria’s Expedition

Once she located a pack of Frostmaw Titans with Detect Presence, Vivisari Vexaria turned the hunt into an almost mechanical sequence. She could teleport around the region, identify targets, kill them within seconds, harvest their parts, and return to town through another rapid series of Blinks. She killed and looted the subdued beasts before retreating from the smell, which she found indescribable. The expedition lasted only an hour, yet she scoured a substantial portion of Hoarfrost Plains and returned to Prismarche soon afterward.

The scale of the result immediately exceeded local expectations. At the Adventurer’s Guild, the appraiser recognized the origin of the materials from a single obsidian-black claw and asked whether she had hunted at Hoarfrost Plains in particular. He had never seen such a quantity of Frostmaw Fangs and Titan Bear Claws in one place. When Vivisari Vexaria cautiously claimed that the displayed materials were all of them, the appraiser pointed out that she appeared to possess comparable quantities of other Frostmaw Titan loot and presumably materials from other creatures native to the region. Her concern that she had been too enthusiastic was justified: the combination of Blink, Detect Presence, one-shot kills, and immediate harvesting had transformed a difficult expedition into an unprecedented haul.

The expedition also establishes the gap between Vivi’s remembered world and the changed reality around her. She knows the terrain almost as well as anyone because of her former experience, but the physical world does not obey the convenient scale of a game. Her knowledge lets her exploit old routes and old hunting practices; her power lets her compress hours or days of ordinary labor into a single hour. Hoarfrost Plains thus rewards her familiarity while simultaneously revealing how radically she now exceeds the people who inhabit the world.

Scarcity and Reputation

The importance of Hoarfrost Plains becomes clearer through Jasper Trevane and Mae’s later discussion. Jasper had obtained only five Frostmaw Titan materials after a three-day expedition through the frozen region, and he expected that another attempt might require a full week or more. Mae considered the circumstances implausible because the plains were difficult to reach even from the far side of the Granite Spines, while Frostmaw Titans were extraordinarily durable even for level-eight-hundred adventurers. They were poor targets for both experience and coin, and the market for their parts had reportedly been dry for decades.

That scarcity makes Vivisari Vexaria’s haul an indirect mystery. Jasper had heard that someone had slaughtered a battalion of the beasts, and Mae could not accept the explanation that an unidentified Titled adventurer or immortal had merely passed through Prismarche for the festival, flown over the mountains, and gathered the materials. The plains’ ecological and logistical conditions make the harvest incompatible with normal adventuring. Vivi’s brief visit has therefore altered a wider market without her name being attached to it, creating evidence of her presence before other characters can fully understand what happened.

Narrative Significance

Hoarfrost Plains functions as a threshold between Vivisari Vexaria’s private memory and the public reality of her return. It is the first familiar hunting ground she deliberately revisits, a place chosen for nostalgia and discretion, yet her behavior there cannot remain discreet because her efficiency violates the region’s established limits. The same landscape that once represented routine progression now exposes a power differential so extreme that ordinary assumptions about travel, hunting, scarcity, and rank begin to fail.

The plains also sharpen the book’s recurring contrast between survival resources and catastrophic force. Frostmaw Titan pelts and claws have concrete economic value, and the region’s remoteness keeps those resources scarce; Vivi’s mobility and instant kills temporarily erase those bottlenecks. Elsewhere, a derailed convoy leaves ordinary travelers vulnerable to deaths and injuries because they lack defensive artifacts and enhanced constitutions, while a single power core can sustain a barrier against Titled-rank monsters. Hoarfrost Plains belongs to the same material logic: technology, magic, geography, and access determine who can survive and who can profit. Yet Vivi’s presence overwhelms that system rather than merely operating within it.

In this sense, Hoarfrost Plains is both a location and a diagnostic instrument. Its cold, distance, powerful beasts, and depleted market measure the ordinary world’s constraints; Vivisari Vexaria’s one-hour harvest measures the extent to which she has surpassed them. The region’s importance culminates when later observers seek an explanation for its sudden influx of rare materials and find that the only plausible answer is an unknown being of extraordinary power. Before the world can recognize Vivi as the returned Sorceress, the plains have already recorded her return in claws, fangs, pelts, and an impossible disturbance in the economy of hunting.
